NABL accredited labs also allowed to certify weights and measures New Delhi, Apr 9 (KNN) In a major relief to traders and industries, government has allowed NABL accredited Testing Labs also to certify weights and measures besides the State Metrology Departments.

The Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Administration has issued the Legal Metrology (Govt approved Testing Center) Amendment Rules 2021 dated 1st Feb 2021.

Government has amended Rule 5 of the Legal Metrology (Govt approved Testing Center) Rules , 2013 and the following sub-rule has been inserted : “The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Labs /ISO:IEC 17025 : 2017 accredited labs for calibration of weights and measures which are in conformity with the conditions of specified in sub rule 3 of rule 5 shall be eligible to be notified as Govt approved Test centers subject to compliance of the provisions of the Act and the Rules made thereunder”.

Trade and industry bodies have been complaining about harassment by the inspectors of Metrology departments.  The matter was since taken up by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries with respective Ministry.

“For ease of doing business and to reduce the compliance burden the third party agencies which are NABL accredited labs have been allowed to verify and stamp weights and measures in addition to the State Legal Metrology Departments” according to the concerned official.

Welcoming the move President of Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) Dr. Animesh Saxena said that it would certainly result in ease of doing business as businesses would be spared of the nuisance of inspectors. 

The Ministry had already issued calrification that enforement officials should not insist on verification of weights & measures used in intermediary process in industries.
