Panaji: The CII-Goa on Wednesday demanded good logistics facilities for the state to become a successful multi-modal logistics hub.

“Logistics support system is a basic requirement for trade and industry much like electricity and water. Lacking which the costs of doing business hikes up, making businesses unviable,??? said Anthony Gaskell, mentor, logistics panel, CII- Goa, at the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti scheme.

He said that, the state needs multi-modal logistics parks where modern warehousing can come up. “In order to keep the logistics costs competitive, the implicit land price must be affordable. Goa needs a modern air-cargo facility, hopefully this will come up fast at Mopa and the facilities at Dabolim can also be improved.

Truck parking facilities need to be provided at the industrial estates and elsewhere, as also town distribution centres for heavy items like building materials etc,??? said Gaskell.

He pointed out that, the new north- south national highway being built will quickly develop choke-points if a back-truck route for heavy traffic is not in place and the NH66 can focus on local and tourist traffic.

“Factories in Goa have the decision makers at their head offices located elsewhere consequently a strong base of local freight forwarders need to be developed for a successfully a multi-modal logistics hub,??? said Gaskell.

CII- Goa is asked for a modern container terminal at MPT. “The container throughput at MPT has stagnated in the range 20-30K TEU’s for many years and has the potential to handle more. Currently the port is only handling a small proportion of the container traffic while it has the potential to handle more. There is need for at least one more riverine berth to be constructed catering to general cargo movement. There is an urgent need for a dual carriageway road to MPT which needs to be completed at the earliest,??? pointed out the industry body.

Mauvin Godinho, Minister for Transport, during the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti function launched the iRAD app. J Ashok Kumar, secretary industries, trade & commerce, Tariq Thomas, secretary transport, Rakesh Kumar, Swetika Sachan, director, Industries, Trade & Commerce and Rajan Satardekar, director, transport were also present at the event.

Speaking at the inaugural, Gaskell stated that Goa already has the basic facilities in place to be a logistics hub viz ports, rivers, national highways, airports, central geographical location, upcoming ICD etc.
