With the retail industry in the state witnessing strong growth and offering potential for creating jobs, the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is asking for retail to be taught as a separate subject in Goa’s colleges.

On Friday, GCCI past president, Manoj M. Caculo, together with chairman of the retail trade committee, Hari Kaul, and director general Sanjay Amonkar met the vice chancellor, Goa University, Dr. Harilal Menon, to discuss the possibility of an all inclusive independent curriculum for retail industry. The Dean, Goa Business School, Dr. Dayanand and Dr. Sudarshan were also present at the meeting.

Caculo pointed out that, 8% of India’s total employment is contributed by retail sector. However there are no formal structured courses teaching retail trade management at the under graduate level in Goa.

“Many retail chains are entering Goa. However Goans are getting limited employment opportunities due to lack of formal courses in the state. Most of the staff are recruited from outside,??? claimed Caculo.

He adaded that raw staff have to be trained by the local retail chain owners which takes considerable time and effort. Further due to the competitive nature of the sector the attrition rate is high,??? said Caculo.

Promising to take up the suggestion seriously, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Menon said that the University would appeal to the local colleges and introduce retail in their basket ofcourses.

Kaul divulged that the overall retail sector is expected to grow around 9-10 per cent annually for the next five year as per government estimates.

“The central government is shortly launching Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) for all retailers. The platform will have multiple choices for both retailers and customers in terms of cataloguing, inventories, warehousing, suppliers, logistics and payments. It will be available to all retailers and will be boon. It will help local retailers compete with the e-commerce giants,??? explained Kaul.

Meanwhile GCCI is planning training courses for local retailers. The trade body is also likely to be part of the board of studies of Goa University to draw up the structure and syllabus on retail management.

GCCI is also prepared a Goa Retail Policy that, encompasses all aspects of the retail trade and is aimed at skill development and more business and employment opportunities for locals. A copy of the policy was handed over to the director of industries trade & commerce, Swetika Sachan, during the day.
